Organic biofilm—often the first stage of algae and lichen growth—can establish on render surfaces if left untreated. This typically appears as light green, red, or black discolouration running down external walls.

Relative difficulty of removal:

• Green algae – Easy

• Red algae – Moderate

• Black algae – Difficult

Preventing the establishment of black algae is the principal aim of the Spring Clean. Once black algae becomes established a more intensive "Restorative Clean" will be required.
